Descripción

Newcastle upon Tyne, the author, 1881. 4to (28.0 x 22.8 cm). 238 pp. [in Roman numerals]. Numerous etchings, wood-engravings and text vignettes, of which many hand-coloured. Contemporary full embossed morocco. Spine rich gilt, with five raised bands; boards with triple gilt, and blind-tooled borders, gilt vignettes and, on the front board, the title, "The compleatest angling booke by a person of honor". Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. = A very beautiful copy, in an attractive binding. Many text illustrations are finely coloured by the author's son, Joseph Crawhall III, James Guthrie and W. Chapman. One of 100 copies in all - apparently including a number of copies that remained uncoloured - being an extended and altered edition of the 1859 first edition, which was never for sale. Skilfully re-backed. The original brown morocco binding is very unusual - only one other such copy is known. All other copies had a similar black calf binding. Not in Dean.
