The attackers numbered some 40,000. Major W. M. Hall, the author of this book, was called upon to attempt, with a small force of native troops, the relief of Kumasi, having first to penetrate 141 miles inland along single file track through the densest jungle forest in Africa, with only native carriers for transport and communications constantly in danger from an actively hostile population.
