Descripción
2 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, with portrait frontispiece (orginal tissue guard present) and 6 large folding charts of magnetism coloured in outline; blue cloth, gilt backs, first volume with worn dustwrapper (not shown in image), second volume largely unopened, a near fine set. Volume I (1896): collects 62 astronomical and mathematical papers; Volume II (1900): Part I: Extracts from Unpublished MSS, edited by Ralph Allen Sampson; Part II: Terrestrial Magnetism, edited by William Grylls Adams. Adams was Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry in the University of Cambridge from 1859 until his death; having won the Smith's and Copley Prizes, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1866. Among many mathematical and astronomical achievements, perhaps his most notable was the prediction of the existence and position of the planet Neptune by purely mathematical means.
