Descripción

Freiburg im Breisgau, Herder, 1874. 8vo (21.3 x 14.0 cm). ix, 229 pp.; Engraved title, letterpress title with large engraved vignette, 66 text engravings. Contemporary half linen over marbled boards. Title on spine. Original engraved front wrapper mounted on front board. Speckled edges. = A rare work on the sounds made by animals, in particular invertebrates, (e.g., crabs, snails, but mostly insects), also on fish, amphibians and reptiles. The author, Hermann Landois (1835-1905), wisely excluded birds and mammals. He was a zoologist and the founder of the Westphalian Zoo in Munster. Provenance: A small oval stamp Leonard Widemayr, and a small stamp of the German ecologist and malacologist Herbert Ant (1933-2010) on the front free endpaper recto, and a larger stamp of Rob Mertens - most probably the German herpetologist Robert Mertens (1894-1975) in the top margin of the title page. Ant purchased the book in 1977, after Mertens's death. Text in Fractur lettertype. Some wear to the boards, front joint starting; paper margins a bit toned, more so towards the edges, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
