First edition, the American issue, printed and bound just as the English issue. Profusely illustrated throughout based on photographs taken from the author, this copy without two maps called for and to be placed at the end of the volume. Thick 8vo., publishers original navy cloth, with gilt vignette of a hippopotamus head on the upper cover, gilt lettering to the spine, t.e.g. xvi, 535 pp, (2) ads pp. A very good copy, hinges cracked, text-block well preserved and clean, the binding with some light age evidence, rear endleaves with some damage (easily refurbished).
