This art is one aspect of Japanese culture that has lasted from ancient times until the present day. The term garden is used here in the widest possible sense, it is taken to stand for a formative art whose objective it is to create a consistent universe out of a great variety of materials, including architecture and other man-made objects, as well as living things like birds and animals, with nature as the central theme. In this broad sense of meaning, the category of gardens may include some of the shrines and tombs that would otherwise scarcely fit into the ordinary conception of gardens.
