About the Book :-The author reveals that various circumstances took him to Kashmir in the spring of 1891. The book is a travelogue that describes the visit of the author to Kashmir, Ladakh and to what is now Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He set off after a stay in Kashmir, to Ladakh via the Zoji la pass. His description of both Kashmir and Ladakh is exhaustive; he describes all that he saw, experienced and observed; the people, the cities and their surroundings, the topography and river drainage, the legal systems etc. From there he crosses into Baltistan via the Karakoram pass and there he describes the military importance of that area. He visits Gilgit and Astor, the Hunza valley. He gets involved in military operations to capture Nilt and Nagar. The book is the product of extensive study of these places. The subject matter of the book is interesting. It contains 54 beautiful illustrations and a map of the area which the author has preserved from oblivion. This book is a reprint of the 1905 edition.
