Since the beginning of time, all children have heard stories telling the stories of the terrible Baba Yaga. The eternal Russian witch who walks with a magic cauldron and often accompanied to her house with chicken legs. He is said to be the embodiment of evil. That she is a servant of Satan... But none of us are born evil. This work tells the story of a girl painfully abandoned to her fate and who by necessity will become the monster that haunts children in the eternal stories of Baba Yaga.
Svetlana is just a little girl when the Tsar's soldiers enter her city, with a Jewish majority, with fire and blood. Miraculously, the girl and her friend Kalinka manage to escape the massacre. In their escape they dive into the forbidden forest, the place of all speculation and superstition. After wandering for days, Svetlana and Kalinka find refuge with Baba, an elderly woman withdrawn from the world. For a moment, for a brief moment, they think they are safe and old Baba gives them back the joy of living. Teach them the use of plants, for better or for worse, as well as other very important things when you are a single woman facing the world... For a long time, in the village near the forest they tolerated Baba, even if they are suspicious of the old. Legends of all kinds circulate around it but the most unwary or desperate go to see it secretly while the rest of the inhabitants look the other way. It's always the same reason, a shameful illness, finding a remedy for a heartbreak or solving a problem for a pregnant woman...
Two young friends who have a proud habit of stealing items from Baba's house will now find a new reason to frequent the area. The presence of the young women, and in particular that of the beautiful Kalinka, will change the course of things. Both fall at Kalinka's feet, but only the proud Vassili will be able to win the young girl's heart. The family, horrified by their son's relationship with what they consider the apprentice sorceress, forces Vassili to join the Tsar's army to keep him away from her.
At the end of spring Svetlana and Kalinka go to bathe in the fountain at the exit of the forest, opposite the village. They have so much fun that they forget about time and when they have to go home they realize that someone has stolen their clothes. They are practically naked but so happy and carefree that they run in the forest. They are observed by a young and lost priest, who in his fanaticism sees only two creatures of the devil walking towards him.
In his deep fanaticism, he manages to convince people that the presence of these followers of Satan is intolerable. The people's response will be bloody and cruel... The seed of resentment germinates in Svetlana's heart.
