First edition thus, the text from the 1829 fourth edition. With a portrait frontispiece of Capt. Cochrane and 18 reproductions of 19th century engravings printed two per plate. Small folio, in the original cloth-covered boards by Clark Constable Ltd. featuring an all-over lithographically printed 19th century engraving of a Russian village scene in blue, map endpapers highlighting Capt. Cochrane's route, and in the original slipcase. 217pp. The book is very fine with just the lightest touch of sun to the spine, almost not worthy of mention. The slipcase only with some rubbing and wear at the seams and corners and a few spots.
Edizione: a remarkable journey, alone and on foot, across the great expanse of a country considered at the time impassable, written in a lively and entertaining manner. captain cochrane was a scottish officer in the royal navy. after being placed on half-pay by the royal navy, following a short career at sea, john dundas cochrane made journeys into spain and portugal, before applying to the admiralty to explore the river niger in africa. being refused permission, he then decided to walk across europe and russia, in an attempt to reach north america.<br> the text was first published in 1823 and new editions appeared in 1824, 1825, and 1829; the present text follows the last of these. the plates reproduce contemporary engravings and drawings from various sources, including the russian engraving printed in blue on white cloth used by clark constable for the binding.<br>
