Prima edizione del solo trattato pubblicato da Cayley (Richmond, Surrey, 1821-Cambridge 1895), uno dei massimi matematici del XIX secolo (tutta la restante, estesissima produzione di Cayley è dispersa in estratti ed in atti accademici). 'For most of his life Cayley worked incessantly at mathematics, theoretical dynamics, and mathematical astronomy. He published only one full-lenght book, 'Treatise on Elliptic Functions'; but his output of papers and memoirs was prodigious, numbering nearly a thousand, the bulk of them since published in thitteen large quarto volumes.
