With 50 beautifully hand-coloured plates. Small folio, handsome contemporary straight grain dark green morocco rebacked to style, gilt bands on the spine, the covers with wide gilt and blind-tooled borders, a.e.g. 79 text plus plates. A nice copy with the plates in clean condition.
Edizione: one of the great old colourplate books. the earliest editions of this work (tooley 226) contained 110 plates, and tooley mentions another issue but does not indicate that fewer plates were included. the plates are dated 1813 but not watermarked; the second edition was published in 1819.<br> includes four illustrations of whaling.
