Gilt edges. = Rare thesis by the German geologist Ferdinand Zirkel (1838-1912), a pioneer in the microscopical research of minerals. He published much on this topic and in 1898 he received the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London (vide Wikipedia). This is his thesis, on the geology of Iceland, written in Latin, as customary in those days. Old owner's name written in the top margin of the front free endpaper, dated 12/6.[18]69. Spine cover partly split, internally a very good, clean copy.
