This book is about a living facet of East African coastal history, the fifteenth century town of Lamu: what it looks like, why it looks the way it does, how it is adapting to modern pressures and what to do to guide the changes generated by these pressures. The theme of the book is conservation, i.e. development causing minimum intervention with the physical environment to ensure that wheat is valuable to the community is not only protected but also reused. The study was commissioned by the Government of Kenya who intends to give the town a permanent lease of life without overwhelming its fragile social fabric.
