This volume, published in accompaniment to the retrospective exhibition held at GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea in Turin, traces back over the life and work of Salvatore Scarpitta (New York, 1919-2007), one of the most original protagonists of the twentieth-century art scene, spanning the United States and Italy. The originality of his language, not easily assigned to any particular twentieth-century art current and which had a deep influence on post-war Italian art, is explored in critical essays and in the extensive section Notes toward a biography. Writings and works, offering an exhaustive panorama of his works. «One hopes that the viewer will see beyond the objective fact under his eyes and will tanscend it. It is the process of transmutation of a physical object into spirit, wich is a purely artistic fact, and I believe in this as the objective of my way of being an artist. This is my morals, my ethics: to find in the visual presence, often in the form of broken relics of life, other impulses that help to understand that this work, if it is art, leads elsewhere. This elsewhere lies in the history shared by all, through the passages everyone encounters sooner or later: birth, death, violence, realization of being a part of nature» (Salvatore Scarpitta) 311 9788836625031 Nuovo (New) .
