Descripción
Cambridge, The University Press, 1929. Large 4to (31.6 x 24.0 cm). 32 pp. [numbered (ii), 563-592]; 12 plates [numbered XLV-LVI], of which three in full colour. Original printed wrappers. = A finely illustrated work, including photos and fine drawings made by the author, the British zoologist Leonhard Harrison Matthews (1901-1986). It deals mainly with albatrosses, penguins, etc. A rarely seen offprint of the famous Discovery Reports. with on the front wrapper stamped "With the writer's compliments". Matthews ".studied biological sciences at King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a first-class degree in 1922. He was involved with the British Colonial Office backed Discovery Investigations from 1924 to 1929, during which he was largely based on the subantarctic island of South Georgia studying the biology of whales and southern elephant seals" (Wikipedia). This might well be his first scientific publication. Spine cover chipped; patches of molding in a small area in the top gutter, but otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Neither in Cat. BM(NH) nor in Nissen IVB.
