16mo., with engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 5 fine copper-engraved portraits and plates and 51 wood-engraved illustrations in the text; attractively bound in contemporary full calf, sides with Oxford frame border in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, second compartment with black leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, marbled edges, gilt doublures, marbled endpapers, backstrip gilt (save label) faded, a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy. A scarce edition based on the first Major of 1825. A useful feature is the printing of the latter's extensive notes at the foot of the relevant pages rather than collectively at end. There are also several alterations and additions.
