dalle note di copertina:

Since consumers are getting more sophisticated
and they are being treated to better graphics and
packaging designs on the shelves in stores—
and in the preparation and presentation of food,
the storefront and facade must also be more of
a "selling tool." The design, material and color
must set the feeling; it has to encapsulate the
taste level, the appeal or fashion attitude, the
look and the image for the people on the street.

The selected graphics, signage, color, texture,
material and the design concept can say what
the targeted market can find in that space than
many paragraphs of type could ever explain.
Since the world as a whole has become so
ecology conscious and so concerned with
saving the cultural heritages, this edition takes
its cue from that trend. We have collected
numerous examples of "re-use" or "re-has"
buildings, structures and spaces that may have
been erected a century or more ago and that are
now used for new and different commercial
spaces.

Some of these old ornate beauties have
been "updated"—made more contemporary by
the simplification of the decorative elements,
changes in materials or fenestration, or with the
application of new colors and trims. Some
remain grandly as they were but have
graciously adapted to new retail/restaurant or
other commercial uses. Some have been
"painted over" and take on a whole new
existence specifically attuned to a new, trendy,
fun-loving society and an area of a city that,
like the phoenix, arises from the ashes of years
of neglect.
We hope that the reader will enjoy perusing
this collection of international storefronts and
facades.
