First published in Germany in 1974, ZEIG MAL! (Show Me!) was translated into English and published a year later. Hugely successful, it was distributed in bookstores throughout the United States. But although it was clearly intended as a sex education guide, its copious non-obscene photographs of pre-teen children by Will McBride exploded into a sex-hysterical controversy that reached the US Supreme Court, where child pornography laws were expanded so as to ban ZIEG MAL! and other books depicting nude children. The less sex-hysterical Germans continued to reprint the book, earning profits for its publisher, and educating an entire generation of parents and their children.
