MARIETTE Pierre
“This particular map falls into the series derived from the Jodocus Hondius of America, 1618. In this case it is closer to the version by Joannes Janssonius, 1623. Like some of the others this has no imprint which makes it difficult to assign. It is not recorded in Tooley's ' Sequence of Maps of America, or the more detailed article by Loeb-Larocque on the French derivatives of Dutch maps. The map of Africa with the same distinctive cartouche is recorded in Tooley's Maps of the African Continent, but is likewise listed as anonymous. However, on two occasions the author has noted the map's presence in examples of Pierre Mariette's ' Theatre Geographique de France, which had editions in 1650 and 1653. Two of the most recognisable features of this map are the square cartouche and the differing wording of the title from others”, (Burden "The Mapping of North America", p. 384). ' Bibliografia: Burden "The Mapping of North America", pp. 384-385, n. 300; Tooley (America) p. 131; Tooley (1972), pl. 9. ' A fine example of this very rare map of America, a pirate copy of the Jodocus Hondius map (1618). “This particular map falls into the series derived from the Jodocus Hondius of America, 1618.
