Acquaforte, firmata e datata in basso a sinistra, sotto l’immagine “S. Gessner inv. et f. 1770”. Alla fine del ‘700 il «Gessnerische Gemälde-Kabinett», cioè il Gabinetto che raccoglieva i dipinti di Salomon Gessner, era considerato uno dei centri artistici più importanti di Zurigo. La collezione, che comprendeva una ventina di guazzi e acquarelli oltre che 17 tra disegni e stampe, era ubicata nell’appartamento privato di Gessner, alla Münstergasse 9, e fu allestita dai familiari in forma di Gabinetto dopo la morte dell’artista. Si trattò della prima collezione privata di dipinti aperta al pubblico a Zurigo e dopo essere stata comprata dalla città, nel 1818 fu rimessa come prestito permanente alla società d’arte dell’epoca che confluì in seguito nell’attuale Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft. Il Gabinetto di Salomon Gessner rimase esposto fino alla prima metà del XIX secolo per poi sparire nei depositi del Kunsthaus da dove è riemerso ora nell’eccellente ricostruzione condotta dal conservatore del Gabinetto di disegni e stampe del museo, Bernhard von Waldkirch. Gessner fu senza dubbio uno dei rappresentanti più significativi dell’illuminismo europeo della seconda metà del Settecento perché riuscì ad interpretare in modo originale e allo stesso tempo consono al gusto e alle idee contemporanee, i nuovi impulsi artisti e letterari dell’epoca. ' Nella sua opera poetica come in quella pittorica il recupero dell’elemento idilliaco tipico delle formule classiciste della poesia pastorale ellenistica si armonizza e si arricchisce di uno sguardo soggettivo, moderno e illuministico nei confronti della natura. Gessner was undoubtedly one of the most significant representatives of the European Enlightenment in the second half of the eighteenth century, because he was able to interpret the new artistic and literary impulses of the time in an original way and at the same time in keeping with contemporary taste and ideas. ' In his poetic work as in the pictorial one, the recovery of the idyllic element typical of the classicist formulas of the Hellenistic pastoral poetry is harmonized and enriched by a subjective, modern and enlightened look at nature. At the end of the 1700s, the "Gessnerische Gemälde-Kabinett," i.e., the Cabinet that collected the paintings of Salomon Gessner, was considered one of the most important artistic centers in Zurich. The collection, which included some twenty gouaches and watercolors as well as 17 drawings and prints, was located in Gessner's private apartment at Münstergasse 9, and was set up by his family in the form of a cabinet after his death. It was the first private collection of paintings to be opened to the public in Zurich, and after being purchased by the city, it was returned in 1818 as a permanent loan to the art society of the time, which later merged into today's Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft. Salomon Gessner's Cabinet remained on display until the first half of the 19th century before disappearing into the storage rooms of the Kunsthaus, from where it has now resurfaced in the excellent reconstruction conducted by the curator of the museum's Prints and Drawings Department, Bernhard von Waldkirch.
