Isaac van Ostade (battezzato il 2 giugno 1621 - sepolto il 16 ottobre 1649) è stato un pittore olandese di genere e paesaggio. Van Ostade nacque ad Haarlem. Iniziò i suoi studi sotto suo fratello, Adriaen, con il quale rimase fino al 1641, quando iniziò il suo proprio studio. In un primo periodo sentì l'influenza di Rembrandt, ma ben presto trovò uno stile più adatto alle sue inclinazioni. Produsse quadri nel 1641-1642 sulle linee di suo fratello, ricevendo, tuttavia, compensi bassi per questo tipo di pittura, in cui poteva solo rimanere subordinato al più celebre Adriaen. Gradualmente abbandonò i soggetti dei cottage di Adriaen per i paesaggi alla moda di Esaias van de Velde e Salomon van Ruysdael. Il progresso di Isaac nel suo nuovo percorso fu molto facilitato dalla sua precedente esperienza come pittore di figure; e, anche se ora sceglieva i suoi soggetti dalle strade del villaggio o dai canali ghiacciati, dava nuova vita alle scene raffigurando gruppi animati di persone con uno studio raffinato e ricercato dei contrasti pittoreschi. ' Van Ostade was born in Haarlem. He began his studies under his brother, Adriaen, with whom he remained until 1641, when he started his own studio. At first he felt the influence of Rembrandt, but soon found a style more suited to his inclinations. He produced paintings in 1641-1642 on the lines of his brother, receiving, however, low fees for this type of painting, in which he could only remain subordinate to the more famous Adriaen. Gradually he abandoned Adriaen's cottage subjects for the fashionable landscapes of Esaias van de Velde and Salomon van Ruysdael. Isaac's progress in his new course was greatly facilitated by his previous experience as a figure painter; and, although he now chose his subjects from village streets or frozen canals, he gave new life to the scenes by depicting animated groups of people with a refined and searching study of picturesque contrasts. He did not live long enough to bring his art to its greatest perfection. He died on October 16, 1649 in Haarlem, after having painted about 400 pictures. Cfr.
