S. Marino lavora all’edificazione della chiesa di Rimini

Bulino, 1600 circa, firmato in basso a sinistra “Raphael Sadeler Fec: Mart. de vos i.”. In basso, quattro versi latini su due colonne: Caesaris hic iussu reparabat Ariminum: at inter/ Has operas Christi iura, MARINE, dabas. / Inde hostem metuens fidei successit Eremo;/ Nunc summo artifici ponere templa parat”. Da un soggetto di Martin De Vos. Buon esemplare, impresso su un foglio carta vergata coeva applicato su un supporto cartaceo del XIX sec. (dim. 268 x 220 mm.), lieve e uniforme brunitura, sporadiche fioriture, nel complesso in buono stato di conservazione.La tavola, raffigura S. Marino che con uno scalpello e un martello lavora all’edificazione della chiesa di Rimini. Sulla destra, all’interno di una piccola grotta, pochi oggetti simbolo della vita frugale ed eremitica del santo. Sullo sfondo, la città di Rimini e il monte Titano con S. Marino.La tavola del Sadeler è la seconda della serie “Oraculum Anachoreticum”, che consiste di 28 rami raffiguranti eremiti, tutti disegnati dal De Vos e incisi dai fratelli Jan e Raphael Sadeler a Venezia tra il 1575 e il 1600, per essere presentate a papa Clemente VIII, cui l’opera è dedicata, nell’estate del 1600, quando i Sadeler si recarono a Roma in occasione dell’anno giubilare. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, attached on a XIX century sheet, (dim. 268 x 220 mm.), light browning, occasional foxing, otherwise in good condition.Plate n. 2 from the series Oraculum Anachotericum.The series consistis of 28 prints of heremits, drawing by Maartin de Vos and engraved by Jan and Raphael Sadeler. The series was published in Venice between 1575 – 1600. The plate following the title-page of the book was devoted to a dedication by the brothers to Clement VIII.It’s very likely that Oraculum Anachoreticum was among those prints that Jan took to Rome in the summer of 1600 to show to Pope Clemente VIII.The plate shows St Marinus with a hammer and chisel working on a column and constructing a church; at right is a cave with his frugal food and belongings.On the background, a landscape with the city of Rimini, Monte Titano and San Marino.
