Description
First edition. With a drawing of the Ordnance Experimental Station near Berlin, "Germany's Oak Ridge", and with a few diagrams. 8vo, in the publisher's gray cloth, the upper cover embossed in blind, the spine in red, endpapers designed to look like newspaper clippings. Now in a protective home-made jacket of brown paper. xiv, 259pp. A very good copy, internally fresh and clean, the cloth a touch mellowed and with some discoloration and rubbing along the front hinge.
Edizione: the story of nazi germany's atomic bomb project, and how many of its scientists eventually ended up working in america. it is the author's assumption that, contrary to popular belief, germany was nowhere near developing a bomb of their own in the final days of the war in europe. viewed from today's perspective, alsos is a fascinating footnote in the history of modern physics.
