Description

Drandaki Anastasia Greek Icons, 14th-18th century. The Rena Andreadis Collection Benaki Museum, SKIRA Publications Description A monograph dedicated to one of the world¿s most important private collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons. Seventy-one portable icons from the Rena Andreadis collection, dating from the 14th to the 18th century, are presented together with an extensive analysis of their iconography and style. These works include some celebrated Byzantine icons such as the famous Volpi Nativity (first quarter of the 15th cent.). The texts demonstrate how painting is related to other contemporary forms of art such as textiles and metalwork. The book consists of the following thematic units: Palaeologan icons from the first quarter of the 14th to the first quarter of the 15th century, Works executed by workshops on Crete and the Aegean islands (15th-17th cent.), Icons from workshops of mainland Greece (15th-17th cent.) and finally 18th-century icons.
