4to. First Edition thus with coloured frontispiece 52 monochrome plates on 32 12 maps and illustrations (one double-page and several full-page) in the text and a large folding plan; purple cloth gilt back a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Frere was Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at Oxford; this famous account swiftly became a standard reference.
