Description
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of the rare auction catalogue of the library of Francisque Michel (1809-1887). XII, 356 pp, 2762 items described. Francique Michel was an outstanding medievalist who, in his late 20s, gave the world the first edition of the Chanson de Roland (1837). His productivity was staggering, as were his problems with money. He sold his library (this catalogue) in mid-career as his interested gradually shifted from editing medieval French texts to other matters, including Basque culture and language, marginalized groups, the historical relationship between France and Scotland, etc. Large 8vo. Original wraps. Wraps somewhat worn and torn, internally clean. Rare.
