8vo., First Edition, with numerous coloured and monochrome plates, several maps in the text and pictorial endpapers, neat inscription on front free endpaper; black cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in dustwrapper. The epitome of the Romantic hero, Thomas Cochrane was the inspiration for both O'Brian and Forester, leading to the creation of Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower - two of the most popular figures in naval and maritime literature. Based partly on unpublished letters, Cordingly's detailed biography is arguably the fullest to date.
