A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 263pp. Social historical novel set in Stockport in the mid-19th century just after the end of the Crimean War. It focuses on Henry Blackstaffe, a master of Stockport's hatting trade who is forced to take on a partner, Jordan Diamond to avoid bankruptcy. The workers do not like the new machinery he iintroduces and his new partner, engaged to a beautiful and wealthy woman also attempts to form a relationship to a female employee far below his own social station. Extremely scarce.
