Description
Paris, Panckoucke, 1782-1783. 4to (25.5 x 19.3 cm). [ii], 445 pp. Near contemporary full tree-calf. Spine with gilt floral patterns, vignettes, and title; boards with gilt-rolled floral borders; gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers; marbled edges. = A rare, attractively bound part [the complete text] of the Ultimate Encyclopaedia and the largest of all great Encyclopaedias and the most important work published during the French Enlightement. This section deals with the so-called Academic arts, viz., horse riding, fencing, dance, and swimming. Edited by the French writer and editor Jacques Lacombe (1721-1811), who was responsible for many sections of the famous Encyclopédie Méthodique (e.g., Amusemens mathématiques, Arts aratoires, etc.). It contains contributions by Allut, Blanquart de Septfontaines, N. Desmarest, and Lalande. A few worm holes and a galley to the hinges; otherwise, a very good, clean and complete copy.
