Edizione di Basilea degli Essays on philosophical subjects pubblicato per la prima volta postumo nel 1795 (London, Cadell-Davies-Creech). Come è noto, Smith Volle che gli esecutori testamentari alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 1790, distruggessero tutti i manoscritti che non era stati pubblicati, ad eccezione dei saggi in bozza che lui stesso avrebbe destinato alla stampa nei presenti Essays.
