L`A. filosofo inglese (Greenoc, Scozia, 1835 - Oxford 1908), insegn filosofia morale all`universit di Glasgow (1866-1893) e fu successivamente (1893-1906) Rettore del Balliol College di Oxford. Si occup anzitutto di storia della filosofia e diede un`ampia esposizione della filosofia di Kant. Ma la sua attivit fu poi principalmente rivolta alla diffusione del pensiero hegeliano in Inghilterra e alla sua rielaborazione nella sfera dei problemi religiosi. Questa raccolta (1907) contiene una serie di scritti elaborati durante gli anni del rettorato e fu la sua ultima importante pubblicazione. Ristampa apparsa lo stesso anno della prima
