4to, [ii], 16pp., one folding engraved plate, pinhole worming to blank margin (not effecting text), recent half calf. The first separately printed edition of a paper which was originally read before the Royal Society on 6th March 1800, and published in the ëPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of Londoní. ìWilliam Hyde Wollastonís paper on mirage theory: Wollaston re-invents Hookís (1665) two-liquid demonstration here. He distinguishes between ìtwo opposite states of the atmosphereî that produce double or triple images; he also notes what we would call looming, and explicitly mentions mirages on roadsîóYoung, Annotated Green-Flash and Mirage Bibliography.
