Description
3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, second volume with frontispiece by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis ; handsomely bound in full crushed morocco (red/green/blue respectively), sides with gilt frame borders, backs with raised bands ruled in gilt, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt tops, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker in each volume, an elegant set ideal as a gift or for presentation. The set comprises 'Portrait of Elmbury' (1945), 'Brensham Village' (1946) and 'The Blue Field (1948). Sumptuous set of one of the most elegaic and best-loved accounts of the English countryside of the twentieth century. Based loosely on Tewkesbury and Bredon (Gloucestershire and Wiltshire respectively), the three novels together paint an unforgettable image of a rural England long passed. Writing only twenty years or so after Hardy's death, Moore rekindles the spirit: 'the finest countryside writer of his generation' (Compton Mackenzie). COMPLETE SETS ARE VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
