Giovio fu il primo autore a comporre un trattato interamente dedicato alle Imprese, descrittive della società aristocratica del Cinquecento, rappresentate sotto forma di stemmi, livree, emblemi, medaglie e geroglifici. Attraverso il testo e l'iconografia delle Imprese, il lettore veniva stimolato a una maggiore passione per la propria autoaffermazione individuale. Il Dialogo di Paolo Giovio diede l'avvio ad una ricca produzione di testi su questo argomento.
