An early American printing of Synge's most noteworthy one-act. Small 8vo, publisher's original flexible boards covered with charcoal paper, upper cover lettered and with a large Irish emblem in gilt. 45 pp. Internally fine with just a hint of toning to a uniform ivory, the binding attractive but with a little rubbing to the paper covering and some wear along the spine.
Edizione: a cornerstone irish and literary renaissance drama, synge's best one-act play. a tragedy, it is set at inishmaan in the aran islands, and like all of synge's plays it is noted for capturing the poetic dialogue of rural ireland. riders to the sea was first performed at the molesworth hall in dublin, in february of 1904. this edition includes an introduction by edward j. o'brien. it has since been the inspiration for no fewer than five operas and two motion pictures.
