Mid-19th century travel to Egypt, Ethiopia, Nubia, Thebes, the Levant (Lebanon, Syria), Israel (Jaffa, Judea, Jerusalem, Bethlehem), the Dead Sea, Damascus, Constantinople, Greece, Ionian Islands, etc. The appendix includes chapters on the natural history of Egypt, hints to travellers, the early Arabs (Bedouin life), the mountain tribes (Emir Bescheer, Maronites, Druses, etc.), and on the government of Corfu. Includes discussions of Moslems, the harem, fellahs, Copts, and the antiquities brought to Britain. Originally published in London (1845) in two vols. with 15 illustrations. This new American edition combines the two vols. into one and has no illustrations.
