8vo., Second and Best Edition, with coloured frontispiece, numerous plates in monochrome and plans (a number full-page) in the text; red cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, a near fine copy in price-clipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly spotted at rear fold-in. Published in Batsford's well-known 'British Heritage' series with splendid wrap-around dustwrapper artwork by Brian Cook. First published in 1940. This edition incorporates the authors' final corrections and a revised article on plainsong.
