Description
Names/date to front end paper. No other marks or inscriptions. Very minor creasing to covers, single crease to sunned spine. A clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards, slight traces of storage and no bumping to corners. 351pp. An account of the life of a planter during the period 1900 to 1920 in Sumatra when the region was changed from a jungle into a vast commercial garden. The indentured labour considered it an outdoor prison and the book does not hide the brutality of the system with its seemingly endless beatings of the 'coolies'. Scarce in the UK.
