Description

Bournemouth, the author, 1872. Tall quarto (37.8 x 26.0 cm). Title in red and black, dedication leaf in red and black, 417 pp. ([v], xi, 343, 277*-318*, xvi); 18 engraved plates; several text illustrations. Contemporary pebbled morocco over marbled boards. Spine with five raised, gilt-bordered bands.; compartments with two red morocco labels with gilt title. Brown wndpapers. Speckled edges. Written by the British archaeologist and antiquarian, Charles Warne (1801-1887) who had a keen interest in the history of the county of Dorset, in Southwestern England. A section on ancient coins found in Dorset forms an appendix, with the already used page numbers 277-318 marked with an asterisk. Included (tipped in) is an original letter, written and signed by the author's son, Charles Holland Warne (1849-1935), regarding this work, and dated 1891. Boards and spine much rubbed at edges. Internally a very good, clean copy.
