Description
Two parts in one volume, 4to (227x162 mm). 228; 90 [i.e. 92], [2] pp. and [3] folding plates. Collation: A-N8 O10; 2A-2D4 2E4+1 2F-2K4 2L6. Quire 2E contains an additional leaf numbered *37 and signed E3. Half title: Canto harmonico del padre F. Andrea di Modona Minore Osservante di San Francesco. Franciscan emblem on title page. Register, colophon and printer's device on last leaf verso. The fifth part opens with a half title: Parte quinta del canto fratto, del padre F. Andrea di Modona Minore Osservante di San Francesco. Musical notations in text. Nicely bound in contemporary hazelnut calf, spine in four compartments with gilt fillets and blind-stamped ornaments, richly gilt panels with blind-stamped corner pieces and ornaments, and in the center a blind-stamped oval frame painted in gold in the middle, marbled edges (top and bottom of the spine repaired, traces of ties, corners and panels' edges slightly worn, some staining). On the front pastedown bookplate of the celebrated Swiss pianist, conductor and music teacher Alfred Denis Cortot (1877-1962), with also his stamp on the title page. Slightly uniformly browned, margins cut a bit short, overall a very good copy.
Rare first edition of this manual on the Gregorian cantus firmus and fractus. "C'est un des meilleurs ouvrages qui ont été faits sur cette matière; malheureusement il est d'une rareté excessive" (Fétis, I, p. 101).
