Description

Bruxelles, Musée royal d'Histoire naturelle de Belgique, 1911. Large 4to (32.3 x 24.8 cm). 65 pp.; 21 text illustrations, six very large (multi-) folded plates. Contemporary black half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. Original printed wrappers bound in. A fine, seldom seen monograph of well-preserved Mesozoic fishes from a Belgian locality, by the Scottish ichthyologist and palaeontologist Ramsay Heatley Traquair (1840-1912). "Traquair trained as a medical doctor, but his thesis was on aspects of fish anatomy. He held posts as Professor of Natural History and Professor of Zoology in England and Ireland, before returning to his native Edinburgh to take up a post at the Museum of Science and Art. He spent the rest of his career there, building up a renowned collection of fossil fish over a period of more than three decades. He published extensively on palaeoichthyology, authoring many papers and a series of monographs." (Wikipedia). The plates are dated 1908, but the work was not published before 1911. Entomological library stamp on the title page, otherwise clean. Especially rare when nicely bound, such as this copy. Dean II, p. 557. Not in Nissen.
