Alice French (1850-1934), better known as Octave Thanet, was an American novelist and short fiction writer. Illustrator Lucius Hitchcock (1868-1942) painted in the academic tradition of the Jean Paul Laurens and Colarossi School of Paris, where he studied with Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin Constant. His pictures were extremely well painted, and he was especially effective in presenting the social elite. His work appeared in most of the major magazines, including Scribners, Harpers Monthly, and Woman's Home Companion. NW62
