Description

Paris, A. and W. Galignani, 1836. 12mo (16.2 x 10.4 cm). xiii, 399 pp.; folding map (frontispiece).Contemporary grained burgundy calf. Spine with gilt lines and title. = Of this informative and well-written work by the Irish journalist and travel writer Michael Joseph Quin (1796-1843) there are two third, expanded editions. One printed in London, and this much less common - different - Paris edition. The author provides a list of expenses of all legs of his journey (e.g. fare in steam-boat from Pesth to Moldava 43 francs), and includes an appendix, "Treaty of Alliance concluded between Russia and Turkey on the 8th of July, 1833," in French and translated into English. The actual journey started in Boulogne and was partly done by diligence, by fishing boat, etc. Provenance: the name Plummer in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto; in pencil "Lydia Joan Johns from Dad Jan 1900" on first blank recto, and her name again in the top margin of the title page, with her address in London. Some wear to the joints, front inner hinge weak but holding, occasional light spotting, otherwise a very good copy.
