Description

Philadelphia, PA, John W. Moore, 1856. Two volumes in two. 8vo (22.8 x 14.7 cm). 1054 pp. [I: xiii, 514; 519, 8]; wood-engraved frontispiece; 11 partly hand-coloured, tissue-guarded wood engravings. Original decorated cloth with gilt title on the spines and gilt vignette on the front boards. = Deals mostly with the American East Coast, Mid-West and central to eastern Canada, but the second volume has 12 chapters on the South East (notably Florida and Alabama) too. In the rear are several chapters on angling, as well as on rattlesnakes and on slavery, in particular on daily activities and feasts. Campbell Hardy's appendix deals with Nova Scotia. The colouring is not original but seems to be contemporary. With in the rear of volume 2 an eight pages publisher's catalogue. Both volumes rebacked, with new endpapers. A small waterstain at the upper part of volume 1 of the first 25 pages and some pages repaired at edges due to the quality of the paper. Sabin, 38914.
