O'Brien studierte klassische Philologie am Trinity College, Cambridge. Nach der Promotion mit einer 1969 ver�ffentlichten Dissertation zu Empedokles bei W. K. C. Guthrie war er Fellow des Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Nach f�nfzehn Jahren in Cambridge wechselte O'Brien 1971 zun�st an das Centre L� Robin des CNRS und der Universit�aris-Sorbonne, sp�r an das von Jean P�n begr�ndete Forschungsteam Histoire des doctrines de la fin de l'Antiquit�t du haut Moyen � (UPR 76, heute Centre Jean P�n). Er ist nunmehr Ehrenpr�dent des von John M.
