Original embossed and gilt-lettered cloth. = A massive work containing contributions to the zoology and anthropology of the Pacific and Indian Ocean islands. Contains, for instance: "Summary of the Voyage", by R. W. Coppinger; "Mammalia", by O. Thomas (this section describes skulls of Torres Straits and Banks islanders); "Aves", by Sharpe; "Reptiles, Batrachians and Pisces", by Guenther; "Molluscs", by E. A. Smith (83, 22 pp.; 4, 1 plates); "Echinodermata", by Bell; "Crustaceans", by Miers; "Coleoptera", by Waterhouse; "Lepidoptera", by Butler; "Alcyonaria and Sponges", by Ridley. With 54 attractive plates containing illustrations of many new and little-known species. Several stamps on the title, including several (cancelled) stamps on the title page: Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, Her Britannic Majesty's Government, and Richard I. Johnson.
