London, The Royal Society, 1767. 4to (22.3 x 17.0 cm). 2 pp. Disbound. = Rare account of an astronomical observation made by James Cook, and in fact his first published paper, except for three charts. It was communicated by the medical doctor, astronomer, chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society, John Bevis (1695-1771), and published in the Society's Philosophical Transactions, volume 57, paper 24. "Mr. Cook, a good mathematician, and very expert in his business.took with him a very good apparatus of instruments" (from the intruduction by John Bevis). Wide-margined. Some light, marginal spotting, a few, weak creases, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Beddie, Bibliography of Captain James Cook, 1930 (erroneously listed under Bevis and not properly indexed). Not in Sabin.
