First translation into English and the Lakeside Classics edition, published not for sale but for Lakeside Press to distribute for Christmas gifts. With frontispiece from photogravure, sketch map, tissue-guarded plates printed in umber based on the author's own paintings. 12mo, in the original maroon cloth, the upper cover with Lakeside Press emblem in gilt within gilt boarder, spine gilt ruled and lettered, t.e.g. xxxv, 387pp. Very near to fine, internally near pristine, spotless and appearing completely unused, the binding strong with firm hinges, the cloth clean and bright with just minute toning to the spine and a few light spots at the outside hinge and edges.

Edizione: special fine gift edition of this first-hand account of the western indian wars. after immigrating the united states as a dare, régis de trobriand achieved recognition after being commissioned into, and serving with, the union army during the civil war; reaching the rank of major general. after a brief return to france trobriand served with the us army in the west, during the indian wars, where he commanded fort stevenson in dakota territory from 1867 to may 10, 1869. his writings on this command were published originally in french, posthumously as "vie militaire dans le dakota" and, in spite of not being in english, were very favorably reviewed by several american newspapers.
