To his cousin Princess Louise of Prussia, Grand Duchess of Baden, whom Alexander addresses as "Ma chère et bonne Cousine", with thanks for Louise's affectionate letter of congratulations on the majority of Alexander's son Nikolai. Alexander apologizes for the tardiness of his response, as he has been travelling incessantly, and writes how much pleasure he takes in the visit of Louise's brother (later Frederick III) to Warsaw, and how Alexander regrets learning of the serious state of health of Louise's father Wilhelm I: "L'arrivée de Votre frère à Varsovie fut une véritable joie de coeur pour moi, car vous savez combien je l'aime et je suis heureux de pouvoir jouir de lui encore ici. J'ai été bien fâché d'apprendre la nouvelle indisposition de mon pauvre Oncle et qu'elle me prive du plaisir de le revoir.
