Description

8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. Thanking for a review of one of his works by the recipient's daughter: "Will you present my grateful acknowledgements to your daughter & assure her I am much gratified by her critique which is written with much elegance & feeling. I can only wish I were more deserving her eulogies. Any active interest you can take in circulating 'The Christian Life', will be appreciated not only by me, but by all the friends of the Hospital, for which it is a kind of circulating advertisement. I heard you friends require copies - perhaps you will allow me to procure them through my bookseller? [.]". - Montgomery's poem "The Omnipresence of the Deity" (1828) had been immortalized by Thomas Macaulay's famously crushing attack in the Edinburgh Review and reached 28 editions. His "Christian Life: A Manual of Sacred Verse" appeared in 1849. The book's fourth edition had received a glowing review (signed by "Orange Flower") in the December 1851 issue of "The Bouquet from Marylebone Gardens", a literary magazine run by aristocratic women based on the far side of Regent's Park who styled themselves with floral pen names. The young Christina Rossetti was among the journal's contributors. - Traces of old mounting to the upper margin and light brownstaining.
